Distribution & AbundanceĬottontails spend their lives in a fairly small area, typically 10 acres or less. These pellets are then eaten by the rabbit, allowing it to digest its food in a location that is more protected from potential predators. ![]() A rabbit eats its food quickly and then moves to a sheltered area, where it excretes soft fecal pellets. Two types of pellets are produced.Ĭottontails are coprophagous, meaning that they eat their own droppings. Rabbit droppings are small, dark, spherical, and less than ½ inch in diameter. Unless the ground is soft or covered in snow, rabbits will likely not leave any noticeable tracks. When rabbits hop, the prints of the hind feet are side by side in front of the prints from the front feet. The prints of their hind feet are about two-and-a-half times as long as the prints of the front feet. Rabbits have five toes on the front feet and four toes on the hind feet.
